Moving on Up!

After closing on our first home two years and four months ago today, we are finally moving into our bedroom upstairs. As we have had the time and money to do so, rooms have been done one by one. We started with the living room first because sadly, I needed a comfortable room to watch television in and decided the smaller bedroom downstairs would act as our temporary sleeping base.

The room upstairs would some day be ours, but not until we did some serious work. We relied on our fathers electrical engineering skills to re-wire the entire house and in February my father installed the last outlet! With long, grey winters we needed to brighten up the room and cover up the cold, dark asbestos tile.

Last week, the carpet installers came and we stared in amazement at our transformation.

(happy cat on the new carpet)

Not wanting to wait for the trim, we set up our bed and are still working on getting our clothes upstairs. Right now I am trying to air out an old dresser and rid it of the mothball smell.

I am contemplating whether or not I should prime it with kilz and then paint it a cheerful color because I have no idea how to destroy the smell and there are a lot of scratches on the wood with mismatched knobs.

So, fellow readers, do you have a cure for the smell of mothballs or what color should I paint the dresser?

No idea on the moth ball smell. I think a nice shade of GREEN or the dresser, and silver knobs would go lovely in your SUPER NICE looking new bedroom! Congrats!

Interesting you should say green. Our night tables are green and the floor in the room adjacent is painted, "Louisville Mint Julep."

Love the white walls. Green is nice, but lately I've really been digging blue. Something in the turquoise family? But that might be too bright.

Funny story, ever since moving out of the Adirondacks, I've been trying to incorporate bright colors into my decor since it appears that while in the Adirondacks, I chose to decorate with forest colors. You know... brown, sky blue and evergreen green?

Which is why I vote for a bright color!

The dresser looks really nice there. The wood looks pretty against the white walls. What about just painting the inside of the drawers with the Kilz? That should get rid of the smell. Maybe you would have to Kilz the inside of the dresser also. Then you could go over the scratches with some restore stuff (I have a bottle you can have) and buy a new set of matching knobs.

How about using Ann's suggestions and paint the knobs green to match the night stands?!!

Looks great! As you know, I am a fan of turning furniture into colorful pieces. I recently did a soft blue dresser and armoire. But, I think a shade of green to coordinate with the orange in your bed spread would be fantastic!

I love it!! What an awesome transformation. I agree with Ann, I like the wood against the white walls. A fun color inside the drawers might be a cheery surprise every morning :) And love the idea of new drawer pulls. If you're worried about scratches, you could always add some extra weathering to it to make it look more antiquey and distressed. My friend recently took a hammer and a blow torch to her dining room table! But that might be a little extreme :)

Gorgeous! Enjoy your nard work and new room.

Lavender. I put lavender in all drawers. I think it should eventually kill the mothballs? Can't wait to see what you decide to do...
